I Am Engaged!!!!

It's been a while since I have updated and I have decided that that is OK. Life has slowed down a little bit since my travelling days- but I will update on things I really want to remember-or any other time I feel like I have something worth writing about!!!....

LIKE GETTING ENGAGED!!

What a complete blessing for God to bring this man... Tim Downs.

It was a very simple engagement- I was at his apartment in Coralville. We were planning on going for a walk. I was laying on the couch and noticed that he looked very  nervous.. almost sick- kind of sweaty and pale looking. I asked him if he was feeling alright and he immediately got on a knee in front of me.

When I saw his eyes I knew what he was doing. He was trembling... with excitement.. and with tears in his eyes he spoke words I will hold in my heart forever- but not share here.

.. and then asked me to be his wife..

It was simple and not fancy- but perfect. Just the two of us sharing what was such a special moment. A moment I will never forget.

We kissed and hugged... and I enjoyed my BEAUTIFUL ring!!!...and then began to share the good news with our families! It was so fun for us to have our families share the excitement with us!! They know how happy we are and we appreciate all of their support!

It's been a fast whirlwind of a relationship- but I know that God has blessed us and worked this out- so what else matters? We are so in love and as much as I want this time to SLOW DOWN so I can enjoy it.. I just cannot wait to see what the future holds for us!

It is something special. Something everyone should have. And I cannot wait to make him my husband!

Grandpa Stan

Yesterday my grandfather passed away. This was a day I NEVER EVER wanted to come. I have forever- since I can remember- had this idea that MY grandparents would NEVER die.. Obvioulsy this was very unrealistic and I knew deep down that someday I would have to face this fear. And yesterday I did.

To be real honest- it is a bittersweet thing. Grandpa has been in the nursing home for several months- unable to walk or really take care of himself.. so for me to wish that his life would continue that way is completely selfish and unfair. And I didn't. But it still (for lack of a better word) sucked.

Grandpa LOVED his grandkids. He called me his dolly. He always had a mint in his pocket.. and in exchange for a kiss I could reach into his pocket and help myself. Even with his old arthritic knees he always had room on his lap.

He LOVED his wife.. and I will forever be thankful for their example of what love is supposed to be like- everlasting love- until death did them part. They didn't always like each other- but the LOVE that was shown through them was always present. I think that is one of the reasons I completely dreaded this day. To have to see grandma live without her love. Without her soulmate. I also have dreaded watching my mom lose her dad. And my aunts and uncles lose their dad. What a blessing grandpa has been.. to all of us. He will be missed by so many.

It makes me so thankful that there is a heaven- and that someday we will reunite and live forever.
-together-

I think I get my love for and gift with babies from two people. My dad and my grandpa Stan. Grandpa LOVED his babies. I wish he could have met my future babies- I know he would have loved them so much.

I will miss you grandpa.

Verla

Verla is my great aunt. She is my grandpa Tiedt's older sister. She is 88 years YOUNG. She has more energy than I do some days. She is smart. She is the BEST cook. She has lived a lot of life.

Since taking my new job in Iowa City I have lived with Verla. I have learned a lot about her life as well as some history with my family and thought I would share some of that with you all.

I told her I was going to post about her on my blog- but she doesn't know what a blog is. I'll have to show her someday I suppose. (although I don't have internet at her house so who knows when that will happen..)

The following is a list I've made while living with Verla- some fun facts I did not know or funny things she has said- every day is an adventure.... {The italics are my input}
-------------------
1. Coffee and aspirin make roses or any plants live longer. The first time I saw her pour her coffee over her plant I thought she was crazy... I asked her what she was doing and she said it's good for them! I also saw her put an aspirin tablet in the roses Tim sent her for Valentine's Day.... she said it makes them last longer. I did not know that. But some roses I got from Tim a couple weeks ago still look and smell great.....

2. Verla lived with her husband, Les, in Chicago from 1941-1945. (if I understood this right)... There were two different dance halls or ballrooms. Her and Les like to go to the Trianon Ballroom. They lived close and would go to listen to the jazz music. She said she learned how to waltz with Lawrence Welk. Him and his wife, Fern, lived close to where Les and Verla lived while in Chicago.

3. In 1945, the war ended and Les and Verla moved back home (near Sumner/Readlyn). Verla's mom, my great grandmother, had cancer. They moved home to help take care of her. "I believe God ended the war in 1945 so I could go home and take care of my mom, who had cancer."

4. "Dad always called Marv (my grandpa) "Dolly". He was just so cute and little and 4 years younger than Shorty. He is about 8 years younger than me" It has been so fun for me to hear stories about my grandpa from his older sister. I guess it's easy to forget that at some point in their lives my grandparents were my age. Verla has so many stories about Marv from when he was young and it's been so much fun to hear them and picture him at that age. It's my family history- history I would have never known about without talking to Verla.

5. "We were all the same- Me, Paul, and Marv, but "Shorty" (Elmer) was different- he was a grouch!!" There were four kids in the family- Verla, Paul, Elmer, and Marvin.

6. You should save (freeze them) all of your vegetable and fruit peels throughout the year. When you plant your garden in the spring, dig deeper than your seeds and put the peels into the soil. They will release nutrients that are very good for the soil and the plants you are trying to grow in your garden! Egg shells are especially good- full of calcium! I know NOTHING about gardening- although I think it's important to learn. Verla plants a big garden every year and cans/freezes enough food that a lot of the meals she makes she uses fresh food from her garden year round. I think it's an important and smart thing to know and I'm excited to learn with her this spring as we plant the garden!

7. More than four cups of water a day really ISN'T very good for you. A little lard in your cooking everyday IS good for you. I know this goes against everything current medicine would tell you. But she IS 88 (almost 89) years old and in pretty darn good health considering her age. Maybe we all have a lot to learn from the older generations!! :-)

8. "Your grandpa was quite the character growing up. One morning I went down into the cellar and found the whole cellar floor filled with watermelons!!! You grandpa and his friends had stolen watermelons overnight and decided to store them in our cellar!! When he came later that day I asked him if he knew anything about any watermelons and he just smiled and said, "nope!". He was always finding trouble- never any serious trouble- but enough to make me laugh and keep everyone on our toes!"

9. An excerpt from my diary:
Jan 18, 2012
Today I was off work. I slept in, which was so nice for a change! When I got up I was pleasantly surprised to the smells of home-made pancakes. Verla is giving Grandpa Tiedt a run for his money in the pancake area. They were GOOD! We had pancakes and then it was time to "get some work done". Verla is always going- never sitting- which is probably why she is 88 years old and sometimes I feel like she has more energy than I do. I had told her I would enjoy helping her with things around the house. She keeps telling me things she wants to get done so today I made a list. "Jessica and Verla's "TO-DO's". It's on the fridge and I'm afraid it's filling fast.

One of the tasks on the list was for me to give Verla a hair cut. I'm not sure how she ever got this idea in her head but she has been asking since I moved in if I could trim her hair. I told her my disclaimer was that I have NO training in cutting hair and that I was making no promises about how it would look like when I was done!

....so there we sat. Verla on her stool in the bathroom with a towel draped over her shoulders. I had my dull "sharp" scissors and a comb. I starting pretending to know what I was doing and started the trimming. I actually think it was kind of fun. We talked a lot about her past and she told me stories about grandpa. I'm going to write them all down and need to blog a post for her! After I finished cutting it I put some mousse in it and put it up in some rollers. She taught me how to put her bandanna thing over the curlers so they stayed in place.  She thought it was pretty funny that I had never used curlers before.

After her haircut we headed downstairs to work on the basement. She has so much storage in this house! Verla put on her favorite record and I decided to start a fire. Verla has taught me how to build a fire "just right". We were going through boxes and rearranging stuff when we found a box of Lyle's things. We found Lyle's will, some of his old band books with his schedule in them- where he was going to play on what day, how much he made when he played. Verla talked the whole time about him- how much she loved him and how much fun she would have when he played with the band. She decided to burn them because she needs to "take care of this stuff". She threw them in the fire and sat down. The emotion was so high. I wish I could have taken a picture. There she sat- her rollers in her hair- watching part of her past burn. I told her the emotion were high for me- I can't imagine how she felt. It was a neat moment. I feel honored to have this time with her. She sure is a special person!

Later that night- after organizing some more we had a "high ball" and watched some Lawrence Welk. Not my style- but it felt right. We had a good day and got a lot done today. And I'm starting to wonder maybe if I chose the wrong profession- her hair didn't look all that bad!! Maybe I'll pick up a second career!! ha ha.. Until tomorrow.."

10. Verla was 23 when her mom passed away from cancer (her mom was 43). Verla's husband, Les died when Verla was 56 from a heart attack. Verla had ovarian cancer and was given 6 months to live at 77 years old. (obviously she beat it... she is so strong) Verla's second husband, Lyle died when Verla was 82. One of Verla's very best friends (and her aunt), Viera, died just two days after her husband, Lyle died. Verla's son, Bill, died in 2010- Verla was 86. We all go through life struggles and lose loved ones- but I never realize how blessed I am until I sit down and listen to the life struggles of other people. I cannot imagine losing my mom, or husband, or son... and like I said in the beginning of this post- she has lived so much life but through that life has lost so many loved ones.
---------------
Verla and I have had a lot of "heart to hearts"- most of them when I don't really say anything- but she talks. And sometimes (a lot of times) we laugh, sometimes we cry, but mostly I think it's good for her to just talk. She loves to tell stories of her loved ones- of her sweet son Bill who she misses so dearly- and her very best friend Viera. Verla wouldn't want anyone to feel sorry for her- but she has been a good reminder to me that when I feel like my life isn't going the way I think it should- I still have so many blessings to count- and I have thanked her for that reminder.

Living at her house isn't always easy. I get NO cell phone reception there- I have no Internet- I have no cable TV- I'm secluded in the woods.... but honestly it's been kind of good for me. Sometimes it's nice to "unplug" and just enjoy the outdoors. I keep in touch with everyone through my land line while I'm there. :-)

To end this I will say I really do appreciate her and I am so thankful that she has given me a place to stay!! I am learning life lessons from her and stories about my family that I am grateful to know!!

What a Week!!!!

It has been a little while since I've updated- so I thought while Elizabeth takes a little nap I would take advantage of the internet here at the hospital and update!!

First and most importantly- I am now the proud aunt to a niece and TWO nephews!!! Sweet Landen Layne joined the world January 22! He weighed 8 pounds 13 ounces and was 21.5 inches long. I was going to post a picture but the hospital has strict internet rules- you will have to all look at facebook or come visit for yourselves to see his adorable little face. :-)

Landen has done great!! He's eating well and gaining weight. He's a great baby- as Liz says, "all he does is eats, sleeps, and poops!!"  I reminded her to just enjoy him sleeping because you just never know how long that will last!! Elizabeth had some problems with infection and because of that developed really bad hives- but she is on the mend and HOPEFULLY will be able to get home tomorrow. Landen has been discharged from the hospital but we were lucky enough to have them stay on the mother/baby floor so he has been able to stay in the room with her. It has been been a blessing to have them in Iowa City- probably not as convenient for them but I have been able to come help them out a lot. It's fun to have family so close- it's been a long time since I've lived in a town where I have had family this close!!

My new job is going well! The first two weeks I was in the main hospital orientation which was long, however I did meet some awesome people who are also new to the area so that's good! This week I started in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). They separate the NICU here into bays- Bay 1 is the highest level acuity. Most of the kids are very sick, on the vent, have drips, micro-preemie's.... and then as they progress they move through bays 2-5 until they go home. I'm working in Bay 1- meeting the doctors I will be consulting with when I go out to pick up a transport kid. I also have been learning how they do things here. If I have learned anything it is that every hospital does things different. That is the most important thing I will need to learn in my 6 weeks in the NICU. New policies and procedures.... fun fun. :-)

After my 6 weeks in the NICU I will be in the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit). I am both very excited and very nervous about working in the PICU. I'm so excited to learn.. but nervous because it's such a different world in PICU. However- I will be transporting kids 8 years old and younger so I realize I have a lot to learn! :-)

After PICU I will have actual transport orientation which will last as long as I need it to. I will spend a week or so in surgery working on intubations, I will spend time working with the neonatologists/residents/NP's working on skills I will need on transport- like putting in lines, needle aspirations, resuscitation... pretty much anything I will need to do when I'm on my own in some rural hospital!! I'm very excited about it. I am excited to be challenged and learn new skills. It's too easy to get too comfortable when you don't challenge yourself to keep learning....

Other than work- life has been pretty good. I am going to write a full blog post sometime on living with Verla. I am so thankful that things have worked out the way they have in my life and I have had the opportunity to really get to know her. She is an AMAZING woman who has already taught me so much. She has a different perspective on life because she is 88 years old- she grew up much different than I did- and she has lived a LOT of life. We have laughed together, cried together, and spent many hours talking- most of the talking from her- telling me story after story of her life (and several about when my Grandpa Marv was younger...). She is amazing... and the food- oh my- I told her AGAIN this morning that she needs to quit making such amazing food because I have a flight suite to fit into!!! More to come about that...  Many of you have asked about my house. I will be putting it on the market after the 1st of February. That would be a prayer request- pray that is sells fast and I can truly move on with my life here in Iowa City. I am sick of living out of 2 houses... and a suite case really because I haven't had time to go back to Des Moines lately!!! Hopefully it will sell fast....

Tim and I are doing so well!! He is amazing and I feel so blessed to have him by my side through all of these life transitions. Me moving to Iowa City and starting a new job has been a change for both of us but he has been so patient and awesome through it all. I am thankful for him and his entire family. It has been fun to watch him with Landen, too- he loves kids and I had to fight for time to hold him while he was here!!

I suppose that is all I know for now... Landen is waking up, Liz is napping, and Andrew took a couple hours to leave the hospital room and regroup- I guess that means I'm up for some cuddle time!!! Being an aunt really is the best... but hopefully someday soon I'll get to have my own kiddos to throw into the mix of cousins!!  It's so much fun!! :-) God bless you all...

New Beginnings!

Well... today I am packing to move to Iowa City. My life has been full of transitions (jobs and moving) for too long now... I'm excited to settle down and "start over".

I am starting a new job tomorrow morning. I keep catching myself feeling butterflies and that all too familiar homesick feeling I have felt every time I was packing to start a new job. The feeling of fear... anxiousness.. the unknown.  However, directly following that thought is an overwhelming sense of security and peace and excitement.  I remember that I am only moving to Iowa City. Not Las Vegas. Not Connecticut. Not 1300 miles away. But Iowa City. 90 minutes from home, Des Moines, Tim.. only 3 1/2 hours from Heidi. Ahhh.. and that, my friends, is so awesome.

I still have a little bit of anxiousness- the normal "starting a new job kind of anxiousness"- hoping I can meet  friends quickly, find a good church home, and transition into a new life in Iowa City. The job I'll be doing gives me anxiety- but I know with 6 months of training and classes I'll be ready when I'm on my own picking up little ones in the helicopter!! :-)

Throughout this whole job hunting process I knew wherever I ended up (unless I took another travel assignment), I would have to find a place to live and of course pay rent. Becuase of my mortgage in Pleasant Hill, I was anxious about how this would work out.  However God has taught me, once again, to trust Him- and more importantly not to worry. Doors have opepened up and it worked out for me to stay with my great aunt, Verla. Verla lives on an acreage in a big old farm house just north of Iowa City. I will be putting my house  up for sale soon (know anyone who wants to buy a house?), and until the house sells I have been invited to stay with her. I am very grateful for her and to her for allowing me to live with her for a little while- and I think she is a little excited, too! I can see many nights of playing cards in my future....  :-)

I said at the beginning of this post how my life has been so full of transitions. I know change is inevitable in my life and I know many "transitions" are yet to come, but I'm excited about having a regular full time job again. I'm excited to have the stability that comes with a full time job- and not moving every three months. I'm excited about the future! ;-) I want to give the glory to the Lord, the One who deserves it. The One who carried me a couple years ago... when I so broken and too weak to stand on my own. 2-3 years ago I never, ever, would have thought I would be packing my bags to start a job as a transport nurse at the University of Iowa. I never thought I would have the opportunities I did to travel and experience this beautiful country over the last year. But HE has pulled me through and blessed me way beyond what I deserve. And I am so thankful.

So tomorrow as I start this new job- this new chapter in my life- I will be remembering that HE is in control of everything- of my house selling- my job- my fears- my relationships- everything. And I will be praising Him. Praising Him for bringing me to this place- where I can hopefully effect the lives of many more families and bless those around me. Where I can use my nursing skills and do what I love to do. Where I will be challenged to learn and be stretched to know so much more than I know right now.

I would challenge anyone reading this- anyone going through a transition or difficult change in your life- trust the Lord. Let Him carry you when you feel weak. Trust Him- to guide you where you're meant to be. I have no doubt that I am where I was meant to be. God has a perfect plan for my life and I feel like this is just the beginning!!

"My sould finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will never be shaken!"
Psalm 62: 1-2

Happy New Years!!!

Happy New Years everyone... I'm writing from Orlando, Florida. It was a beautiful 80*, sunny day here today. Tomorrow looks like it's supposed to be just as beautiful... and the beach is calling my name!!! I can't think a better way to enjoy the first day of 2012 by staring into the beauty that is the ocean... it always reminds of how amazing God is.

2011 was an amazing year. I feel like some sort of recap for the year was appropriate- however it will be short because I have some cousins calling my name for a game of spoons. :-)

Highlights:

Traveling. What can I even say about this. The decision to travel was one of the hardest I have ever made, however looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. What a blessing it has been. I have grown as a person, as a nurse, and made life-long friends I will FOREVER be thankful for.  Coming back home after Connecticut was a very hard transition- and being "unemployed" was scary. Both have forced me to trust God like I never have before. It takes faith to know HE will take care of me when the bills keep coming and the paychecks stop coming. :-)

As I knew He would, He took care of me....  This week I was offered the job of my dreams. I will be starting as a Pediatric/Neonatal Transport Nurse at the University of Iowa next week. I will have about 5-6 months of intense training and orientation- I will orient to both the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) and PICU (pediatric intensive care unit).  I will spend a couple weeks working with anesthesia in surgery, practicing intubation. I will learn how to transport infants- 8 years old. I will learn to start my own lines (IV, Umbilical, IO..). I will be transporting in the helicopter and the ambulance. I am very excited.. nervous too, but mostly excited. I was ready for a change and I know this will continue to push me out of my comfort zone and I will be learning. I have realized how much I love to learn and that is one reason I really loved traveling. I am excited!!

2011 also brought an amazing man to my life- first as a friendship and now as a boyfriend. He loves the Lord more than he loves me.. and that alone makes him amazing. I am thankful for you, Tim, and pray that Lord will continue to stay the center of US and we will grow together through HIM.

I had the privilege of meeting and loving my beautiful niece Ellery in 2011. She was given to us in February and what a joy she has been. God must really love us to bless us with her...

Traveling... not just travel nursing but traveling the United States. What a beautiful country we live in... I have traveled from Nevada to Connecticut and down to Florida.. seeing most of the states in between. So many memories....

I have found health and happiness. I feel like I rediscovered who I am and what I want in life. I am excited to see what the future holds for 2012 and the years to come. Thank you to all of you for your love and prayers through this year.. a year full of scary transitions. Thank you to those of you who have stood by my side, even when it wasn't easy and life took us in different directions. I feel like such a lucky girl to have so many amazing friends and to have my family!!!!  God bless you all..

Time to go kick some butt in spoons. :-)

Dear Diary: Random Thoughts

Random Thoughts:

I have been home from Connecticut for almost three weeks now.... and I love being home. I have spent a lot of time driving from home to Denver to see family.  Life has been so good to me and I am so excited about the future.

We celebrated "Christmas" this weekend with the Ellison family. It was good to see and spend time with everyone. We played boo-ray: the pot got up to $75... I didn't win.

I miss the babies at work... but I don't necessarily miss work. A lot of people have asked me if I'm getting bored and I can honestly say I haven't. I am soaking up this time with family and this time off.

Grandpa Ellison is in the hospital. I love him and am praying he gets better soon.

I still have NO idea where I am going to be working in January. I don't know if I will take another travel job or a permanent job as a nurse somewhere. It's scary and exciting all at the same time. Part of me is ready to settle down and be home for good, and part of me wants to take one more assignment.... and the options of where I can go are very exciting- but I'm not sharing those just yet.

I have SO MUCH blogging I want to do- but this is all I can do for now. I need to do a wrap up post on CT and finish my post about when my mom and grandma's came out to visit. Maybe if I find some free time. ;-)

I have a boyfriend. His name is Tim and he is amazing. I'm excited about the future. We pray together. It's awesome. More to come.....

I've had the flu the last two days. The worst I have felt in a very long time.. I'm getting better though- thank you mom for taking care of me.

That is all for now- I told you it was random.... Happy Tuesday everyone. :-)
